A Bakelite GMT-Master and “Pussy Galore.” [Writing in Progress]

In Spring 2018 I was approached about an old Rolex GMT-Master that had been brought into another jeweller for service. The shop owner recognised that it was something special, informed the lady and asked me for a guide price.

The client’s husband had been given it by his employer in the 1960s and then left it in a drawer over recent years, In July 2018 she asked for a definite offer and I was delighted to conclude the purchase of this watch, for a significant five-figure sum:

What’s so special about it? Well, let’s assess the watch in full before turning to the most extraordinary element.

Prior to completing the purchase I would not have dared to try any work on the watch, but once it was ours I could ask my gifted colleague to try to improve the marked, acrylic glass so that we could better see the dial underneath. Here is the watch as first received :

You can see below how my clever man taped up the precious Bakelite bezel, to protect it before applying abrasives of increasing fineness to the glass.

This cheap and cheerful method removes most of the scratches and dull spots in an old glass, allowing the dial to be seen resplendent again under a cool English sky :
