Stainless steel Daytona with box and 2014 warranty card, a former insurance write-off now revived with parts from another steel Daytona and priced to reflect its compromised status. Stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona model 116520, case number 1J9715U9 with black dial on Oysterlock 78490 bracelet. Has Rolex boxes, Cosmograph Daytona booklet, red swing-tag and international Rolex warranty card dated July 2014 when it appears to have been sold in Japan (possibly by the Rolex main agent Tompkins). This random case number watch is now in very attractive condition but its history and status needs to be documented clearly. We bought it in May 2018 from insurers in an unsaleable state. It had no bracelet, a fake black ceramic bezel and a skeletonised dial with broken balance assembly in its correct Rolex 4130 calibre movement. Insurers had asked Rolex UK to restore it but in January 2018 the latter rejected it because of the modifications. Rolex often “black-ball” such a watch and will not then service it again, although independent watch-makers can. We bought it as it was, in the hope of one day restoring it or using the parts. Then in June 2023 we bought another Rolex Daytona 116520 (circa 2005) from a regional UK police force. This second watch was also unsaleable in its own right because its mid-case had been re-numbered ( to F981806 ), but we realised that it could be the donor of other parts for the first watch. We then fitted the correct Rolex steel bezel and black dial from the second Daytona onto the first, with the Oysterlock 78490 bracelet and complete balance assembly (non-Parachrom). It should be noted that the 2014 watch we are selling would have had a 78590 bracelet rather than the almost identical 78490 from the 2005 watch that has been fitted, similarly it would have had a Parachrom balance rather than the non-Parachrom from the earlier watch, while the glass fitted is generic, not by Rolex. The latest ceramic bezel model now has a NEW RRP of £12,700 but like its predecessors will be almost impossible to get from main agents and found on the secondary market offered with a large premium. The earlier 116520 is an enduringly popular choice and remains in its own right one of the most sought after models. If you have any questions about this watch, please ask to speak with one of Miltons Watch Team, including two former managers of Rolex main agents. For interest only, an image of the watch that we are selling shown next to the “left-over” parts assembled in a second, monstrous watch that we won't be retailing may be viewed by clicking through the main picture. A tabular record of the parts used from the two source watches should also then be visible.
