£2,999 Stock number: 82-51-00231mm / mid-size stainless steel Rolex Datejust model 6824 with classic silver / baton dial on Jubilee 62510 bracelet. Dating from around 1981, this watch is in very pleasing condition. Unusually, it has been fitted with a synthetic sapphire glass that is not by Rolex, to update the older and more easily marked acrylic glass. We don’t as a rule approve of such work, but this appears to have been very well executed, it modernises the watch and tests well for water-resistance (as always, provided the crown is screwed down). Comes with a later Rolex box, Oyster booklet, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. This model correctly has the 2000-series calibre Rolex movement with no “quick-set” facility for changing the date at the end of a short month. We believe this dial to have been repainted / restored, but the “boiler gauge” is an attractive and interesting variant. Comes with its original Rolex papers from Nassau in the Bahamas dated September 1999, the Oyster booklet and later Rolex boxes. The bracelet shows significant wear such as one might expect of an older piece and from its markings does indeed appear to have come from an older watch; perhaps the original was damaged in some way and this one used to replace it. The watch still has a lot of life remaining if kept for lighter, “dress” wear and is priced very keenly for a two-tone model.

Contrary to the widely-held belief of a million wine-bar experts, for over twenty years Rolex DID make a quartz watch whose second hand TICKS rather than sweeps, as one might otherwise rightly expect of their mechanical watches. These Oysterquartz models are quite rare and their chunky looks are not to everyone's taste, but they have a following and this one is in very nice condition. It comes with a Rolex box-set and UK service slip from 2012, when we had it serviced and a new dial fitted at a cost of over £750. We like to warn prospective buyers just how LOUD the ticking sound always is on the Rolex 5035 quartz module.
