This unusual model with R49xxxx case number is from about 1988; it enjoyed quite limited production and was soon superseded by the sapphire glass 140×0-series Air-Kings that were never available with a “date” feature. To change the date on this 1520-calibre model, one simply advances the main hands forwards or backwards past midnight. Unusually, this watch has been fitted with a synthetic sapphire glass that is not by Rolex, to update the older and more easily marked acrylic glass. We don't as a rule approve of such work, but this appears to have been very well executed, it modernises the watch and tests well for water-resistancy.

Rolex fans like the watch team here at Miltons were delighted when Rolex re-introduced an SD4000 into the range, after the bulk of the “Teletubby” DeepSea 116660 had put off so many ordinary buyers. The slightly smaller size of this model, the lack of a sometimes-annoying cyclops magnifying lens as found on the Date Submariners and the full, 60-minute marked bezel (a nod to Rolex’s military past) were instant hits.
