£4,299 Stock number: 12-66-021Boxed and papered set in lovely condition, of interest to collectors! Stainless steel Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust model 17000 with silver / baton dial. Contrary to the widely-held belief of a million wine-bar experts, for over twenty years Rolex DID make a quartz Oyster whose second hand TICKS rather than sweeps, as one might otherwise rightly expect of their mechanical watches. These Oysterquartz models are quite rare and their angular looks are not to everyone’s taste, but they have a growing following and this one is in wonderful condition. It comes with Rolex boxes, Oysterquartz booklets, red swing-tag, original UK papers from Boodle & Dunthorne dated February 1999* and a Rolex UK service slip from 2007. We like to warn prospective buyers just how LOUD the ticking sound always is on the Rolex 5035 quartz module. If you enjoy stalking lions, work for the Special Forces or are plagued by fears that a ticking bomb might be under your living room chair, this may not be the model for you. * The watch has an N24xxxx case number suggesting that it was first supplied to Boodles some years before it finally sold. Like many Rolex models which now interest collectors, the Oysterquartz was not a popular watch in its own production lifetime.

In very pleasing condition, this watch comes with original boxes, Oyster booklet, numbered green swing-tag, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. It was first sold by Goldsmiths in August 1997, but the original chronometer certificate can no longer be found. Rolex UK service marks inside the case-back are consistent with a receipt we were shown that described a £630 overhaul carried out by Goldsmiths in 2015. The hands appear to have been replaced with black-painted ones, sometimes specified by those with weaker eye-sight in order to give contrast against the dial behind. The nearest NEW equivalent is now £10,950! This watch is priced very reasonably to reflect a number of factors : (1) the fluted bezel and bracelet both show signs of wear, such that we now recommend this watch be kept for dress wear only, (2) under magnification, it can be seen that the dial paint is deteriorating and (3) the case and model numbers are both substantially worn *
* Ladies’ Rolex Datejusts of this generation are often now found with one or more of the numerals in the case number obscured by bracelet wear. This was caused by the end-links rubbing constantly against the case. In this instance the third and fifth digits of the unique case number are obscured by bracelet wear, but luckily we were able to confirm the correct case number of the watch from its service history through a Rolex main agent and Rolex UK.
