More peculiar than that is the fact that the case number is printed on the card with lower case letters — a most unusual aberration from Rolex!

£2,799 Stock number: 70-24-011Stainless steel and white metal 36mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. Model 16014 with smart grey “pin-stripe” / baton dial on Jubilee 62510 bracelet. This mid-to-late 1980s model is in good condition for its age but there is some wear / distortion to the bracelet and please note that we no longer guarantee these older, plastic glass models to be water-resistant. It comes with a later Rolex box, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. This model correctly has the 3035 calibre movement with “quick-set” facility for changing the date at the end of a short month, where the user turns the crown backwards when in its mid-position to advance the date. This random case number watch is in superb condition with only superficial marks to the bezel. The NEW ceramic bezels models now have an RRP of £10,500 but “waiting lists” are generally closed and that version is commonly being sold on the secondary market for over £19,000. This has made the outgoing 116520 an extremely attractive purchase and it remains in its own right one of the most sought after models.

Stainless steel Rolex GMT-Master II model 16710 T with black “SWISS MADE” dial and so-called “Pepsi” red / blue bezel insert on Oysterlock 78790A bracelet. This lovely 3185-calibre model has original boxes, GMT-Master booklet, both swing-tags* and UK papers from Peers Jewellers in Blackpool dated July 2004. It is in superb condition – even the 16710 sticker is still in place on the case-back! The market for NEW steel GMT-Masters has now gone mad but in any event these slightly slimmer, previous-generation models have in the last couple of years enjoyed a very strong market that has been all their own. A quick search of UK dealers will illustrate that many are asking significantly more than this for similar 16710 GMT-Masters!
* While many GMT-Masters have in recent years been converted into “PEPSI” versions through the simple swapping of one bezel insert for another, the numbered green swing-tag here proves that this watch originally left Rolex with a blue and red bezel. It is explicitly denoted as a “16710BLRO“

This somewhat collectible model dates from around 1977. To change the date on this 1520-calibre model, one simply advances the main hands forwards or backwards past midnight. In fine condition for its age, but please note that (1) the bracelet shows some signs of wear, (2) we no longer guarantee these older, plastic glass models to be water-resistant and (3) time-keeping may-not be as accurate as a modern, chronometer-rated Rolex. £2,999 Stock number: 52-22-028Of interest to collectors! Stainless steel Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust model 17000 from the late 1970s. Note the original, early dial with no “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER” text but just the simple “OYSTERQUARTZ” name in the lower half of the dial. Contrary to the widely-held belief of a million wine-bar experts, for over twenty years Rolex DID make a quartz watch whose second hand TICKS rather than sweeps, as one might otherwise rightly expect of their mechanical watches. These Oysterquartz models are quite rare and their chunky looks are not to everyone's taste, but they have a following and this early example is in very nice condition. Under close examination one can see that the dial has lost some of the expired luminous dots from its chapter ring (rim), but we would rate it as 85% condition, excellent for its age. The bracelet is in outstanding condition and has an “MA5” clasp code, suggesting that it has been replaced at some point from late 2005 onwards. The watch comes with later Rolex boxes, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. We like to warn prospective buyers just how LOUD the ticking sound always is on the Rolex 5035 quartz module: if you enjoy stalking lions, work for the Special Forces or are plagued by fears that a ticking bomb might be under your living room chair, this may not be the model for you. Offered with a one year warranty, since the Oysterquartz range is now discontinued.

£6,699 Stock number: 52-14-009Bicolour Rolex GMT-Master II model 16713 with black dial and bezel insert from around 1997. Unusually, a previous owner has “upgraded” the bracelet to a later Oysterlock 78493 (a 2003 version properly fitted to bicolour Daytona model 116523s). The clasp and solid end-links of this bracelet would commonly be thought better than those of the version first fitted to this GMT-Master, but for some buyers originality would be more important; they might prefer to wait for an example with correct Oysterlock 78793 or Jubilee 62523 bracelet. The watch is in very pleasing condition. The main case, bracelet and bezel insert are all in splendid order but there are minor signs of age / wear to glass, dial and hands. Gent’s stainless steel Breitling Chronomat Evolution automatic bracelet watch, model A13356 on Pilot bracelet with white dial bearing Red Arrows badge, unique to this Limited Edition series of just 40 watches. The case-back is engraved with an image of the team in formation and “40 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE” / EDITION LIMITEE __/40. This 2005 watch is in very pleasing condition with Breitling boxes, instruction booklet, swing-tag (no sticker), authorised distributor leaflet and an international warranty booklet. This appears to be from Andrew Michaels Jewellers, through whom the watches were supplied, but frustratingly the back page is missing. Having a case number in the S31xxxx range, this will be a mid-1990s watch. At that time the plain Oyster bracelet was a standard option and the “T11″ clasp code on this one denotes November 1995 manufacture of the part, suggesting that it is original to the watch. Showing few signs of its age, it comes with Rolex boxes, increasingly-rare GMT-Master booklet printed in 1994 (see pages 14 and following), our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. The NEW equivalent is now £7,750 (if you could find one) but these earlier models have increasingly attracted a collector following of their own.

While the gold-coloured dial seems unusual on a steel watch, this was an option for a number of years and lends an appealing “vintage” feel to it.
