This lovely example of what we used to call a “double diamond” model comes with original boxes, Datejust booklet, numbered green swing-tag and undated UK warranty card from Watches of Switzerland. It is from around 2012 and shows little sign of wear, just some superficial marks to the glass under magnification. There is no direct NEW equivalent, but the closest watch with just a fluted gold bezel now has an RRP of £9,250 (while one with a full diamond bezel is now £14,050)! £7,299 Stock number: 82-50-03926mm Rolex Datejust in 18ct yellow gold, model 69178 with bronze / diamond dot dial on President 8570 bracelet. Dials with text printed in pale ink such as this are sometimes referred to as “ghost” dials, and this one is particularly attractive because the diamonds in their white metal settings stand out prominently against the darker background. In very good condition, the watch comes with Datejust booklet, international Rolex papers dated July 1989 and Rolex UK service slips dated February 2005 and November 2015. It comes in a large, embroidered Rolex presentation box, but we note that the cushion inside is a generic replacement. The nearest NEW equivalent is now £22,600! We would generally recommend that any gold Rolex of this age should be considered a dress watch, not intended for hard wear.

What a talking-point ! When we sold this watch previously it still had its original accessories including UK papers from the jewellers Lister Horsfall dated July 2005, but these were no longer with it when the watch was recently traded back in with us. In very pleasing condition, it now comes with Rolex boxes, Datejust booklet, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. The nearest NEW equivalent is now £10,300 — but a meteorite option is no longer available.

£6,999 Stock number: 82-15-002Collectible Submariner with gorgeous, original dial! Stainless steel Rolex Submariner Date 16800, the “transitional” model with synthetic sapphire glass, matt black dial and quick-set 3035 calibre movement on Oyster Fliplock 93150 bracelet. This is a desirable model, especially when fitted with the early dial that does not have white metal surrounds to the hour indices. With a 7.1m case number this one dates from around 1982, a year or two into the model’s short production run. A very nice example of an interesting version (about whose future value many will speculate), it comes with old-style boxes, our own warranty card and a certificate from the ALR Watch Register confirming that we checked it with them. We have lightly brushed the bracelet (which appears to be original to the watch, having date code G in the clasp and 593 end-links), but left the exterior of the main case and the glass showing light signs of wear as when the watch came to us. The bezel insert also shows moderate wear but appears to be original, the “pearl” dot having discoloured as expected. The new equivalent is now £6,550 but a watch like this increasingly has a market of its own.

The main watch-head of this 1988 model is in excellent condition (and still in service stickers) after a £524 overhaul at Rolex UK, but the Jubilee bracelet was the “dressier” option and that part does show moderate wear, with minor bumps and distortion . The last time a NEW equivalent appeared in Rolex’s price list, it was £21,400!

It comes with original Rolex box set, Submariner booklet and UK papers from David M. Robinson in Manchester dated February 2003. In lovely condition, it has just had a new bezel insert fitted. The larger, NEW equivalent is now £7,150 (if you can find one!), but these earlier models have proved increasingly popular in their own right.
